Why is it SOOO difficult for me to gain my children’s respect?!

Dear website visitors & families,

Being a parent is NOT a comfortable ride along a quiet river and we all come to doubt, at times.

If you read French, please check out this article published in femina (dated June, 7, 2015) which bursts with common sense and might help us in our pursuit of balanced authority. Enjoy!

With my familiar greetings, Anna

What do we teach our children?

We teach them that two and two make four, and that Paris is the capital of France.

When will we also teach them what they are?

We should say to each of them: Do you know what you are? You are a marvel. Your are unique. In all the years that have passed, there has never been another child like you. Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers, the way you move.

You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven. You have the capacity for anything. Yes, you are a marvel. And when you grow up, can you then harm another who is, like you a marvel?

You must work, we must all work, to make the world worthy of its children.

The answer to war…

Music and creativity that comes with it is the antidote to violence and war. It is impossible to create while wishing to destroy. Giving life with music and to music can not coexist with taking life.

Now some may ask what about the drums of war? What of the kinds of music where violence is celebrated in modern times? What of creating out of destruction of the old?…

I would pose this as an open discussion because my assertion is that genuine music is the closest a man will ever know of giving birth. It is that pure love that I speak of that one would not wish to ever be confused with something utilitarian or pathological any more then a new child of a parent.

Music born out of introspection and passion for life and its beauty, can not lead to violence. It may be an expression of great sorrow and sadness, anger and indignation, resigned loss of hope or a renewal of hope, love, lust and triumph… But it is an experience of catharses that cleanses the soul and the mind and allows renewal within the sphere of existence that otherwise separates all living beings by their shells of bodies and ego born out of memory and experience. Music at its genuine best is a universal language that unites and connects all life within it and beyond it.
